Recreational Railroading
and RR Museums in the West

Like to ride trains? Interested in western railroad history? Have we got a suggestion...or two...for you, and we're not just talking about the U.S. Canada and Mexico offer some great museum and railroad rides, too. Judging by the numbers of riders and railroad museum visitors, the hunger to get in touch with our flanged wheel past is growing every day. The scream of steam and the pounding of heavy tonnage as it as it roars by an historic depot calls rail enthusiasts of all ages.

The American West, its myths and legends popularized by Hollywood, is an especially fertile location for railfans and railroad enthusiasts of all ages. As much of our past disappears beneath concrete and billboards, saving our railroad history has become an important part of saving our past. Throughout the west, a number of old railroads have been resurrected, many of them narrow gauge and built to serve mining and logging industries before the turn of the last century. Museums chronicling railroad history are also growing in number.

Before you plan your next vacation, especially if you plan to take along the entire family, take a look at what railroading west has to offer. Take a ride on an old steam train, visit a railroad museum and let the kids climb all over an interpretive railroad exhibit. And wherever you go, take along a camera. Most of these rides travel through spectacular scenery. Some provide entertainment. And allórides and museums alikeówill treat you to a sense of American history you won't find anywhere else.

All... Aboooard!
